Biography
Dr. Arthur C. Vailas, Vice Chancellor for Research and Intellectual
Property Management for the University of Houston System and Vice President
for Research for University of Houston, joined UH in 1995 as Vice President
for Research and Vice Provost for Graduate Studies, and Professor and
Distinguished Chair in Biology and Biochemistry. In 1998, with the administrative
consolidation of the UH System and University of Houston, Chancellor/President
Arthur K. Smith appointed Dr. Vailas Vice Chancellor for Research and
Intellectual Property Management for the UH System in addition to his
UH responsibilities.
Prior to joining UH, Dr. Vailas was Associate Dean for Research and
Development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served in a number
of other capacities at that university, including: Professor of Surgery,
Division of Orthopedic Surgery in the College of Medicine; Professor,
Department of Poultry Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences;
and Professor and Director, Biodynamics Laboratory. He also was both
Assistant and Associate Professor in the Department of Physiological
Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his
Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, and was also a postdoctoral fellow
in the Departments of Orthopedics and Biochemistry at the University
of Iowa.
The author of numerous scientific articles and publications, Dr. Vailas
was awarded the International Scholars Award by the University of Houston.
He received the Outstanding Science Achievement Awards from NASA for
COSMOS #2229, U.S.-Russian Space Program, and for the U.S.-Russian Life
Sciences Mission COSMOS #2044. Elected to the NASA Life Sciences Advisory
Subcommittee, he served as study section chairman for the American Institute
for the Biological Sciences on Space Biology.
Dr. Vailas was an invited member and session chairman for the Gordon
Research Conference on Microgravity Biology; a Committee Chairman of
the Musculoskeletal Working Group for the Johnson Space Center Extended
Duration Orbiter and Exercise Counter Measure Program; an elected member
of the National Research Council by the National Academy of Sciences
Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems; and a Soviet Life Science
Delegate, Scientific Exchange for Cosmos 1887 and 2044, NASA. He was
named Distinguished Scientist by California State University; and received
a Faculty Academic Career Development Award from UCLA. Dr. Vailas also
was a recipient of the NIH National Research Service Award while at
the University of Iowa, Orthopaedics; and the NIH Institutional Research
Award, also while at the University of Iowa. Most recently, Dr. Vailas
was appointed as the University of Houstons institutional trustee
to the SURA (Southeastern Universities Research Association, Inc.) Board,
Texas Council on Environmental Technology Development, Member of the
Executive Board on the Southeast Biotechnology Research Park Consortium.
